Details

Your submission include a brief outline of the concept / narrative / theme / experience / vibe that will tie your mixtape together. It could be as abstract or as literal as you like. Previous mixtapes have explored a wide range of themes including: dad music, art school life, a hellish drive, imaginary movie soundtracks, the number 13, chronic pain, crocodiles, a familiar bus journey, an alien abduction, a cooking soundtrack, living with OCD, the working lives of insects, fleeting crushes, brutalist buildings, race and identity, and a love letter to a home country. (That’s just a few! Browse the back catalogue for more 👀).

Your artwork is the visual response to your mixtape – this project celebrates the relationship between music and visual art from cassette sleeve doodles to illustrated record sleeves. 🎵 IT217: HYPEREALITY!
✏️ Charlotte Grange🗓 29.07.24

Charlotte is an illustrator and comic artist based in&nbsp;Bridport, Dorset, England.

Hiya Charlotte. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
This mixtape is about being entirely untethered from the world you know, cast adrift on a downwards spiral.
In the wake of grief, I developed a kind of OCD characterised by a fear of life and death, of the universe, of what’s real and what’s not. OCD isn’t well understood in popular culture, and it took many years bouncing between NHS departments to realise what I had! I put this playlist together to try and iron out what was going on in my head at the time, and to extend a hand out to anyone else going through anything similar.

I’m keeping it real (ha!) with some classic bangers mixed in with strange ambient pop, and it ends on an hopeful note.
What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

I knew what I wanted to do pretty straight off the bat - I’d been experimenting with similar colours and compositions around this topic for a while and I thought that this would be a good reason to finally make that piece! The rough I submitted was a bit, well, rough, and I tried to take it further in the final. The cover is a lot more vapourwave-esque than my original vision (and might end up falsely advertisin the genres in this mix, haha!) but I think it suits the theme.

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

<img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a2486f1371c346561657223b144d2ba2fbb817a7d3ad4cc5a0218001f982f2f7/c6fb945299fa4cc3b759d33d1e209e9c_c5_1000x1000.jpg" data-mid="215405223" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/a2486f1371c346561657223b144d2ba2fbb817a7d3ad4cc5a0218001f982f2f7/c6fb945299fa4cc3b759d33d1e209e9c_c5_1000x1000.jpg" />So Long, See You Tomorrow – Bombay Bicycle Club2014, Island Records / Mmm...RecordsDesign: La Boca
Bombay Bicycle Club’s So Long See You Tomorrow cover is something I really love - it has a bold, modern style that closely resembles medieval book of hours style-illustrations, which is a mix that really works for me - it’s striking. <img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/850809809ea0c8efb5a1e380175859e57177b75cb03cd89fc7ecf0248b79b864/1---Charlotte-Grange.jpg" data-mid="215405226" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/850809809ea0c8efb5a1e380175859e57177b75cb03cd89fc7ecf0248b79b864/1---Charlotte-Grange.jpg" />Old Wow – Sam Lee2020, Cooking VinylArtwork: Alex Merry
In the same vein of old styles modernised, Sam Lee’s Old Wow cover really works nicely - it’s a take on Regency-looking illustration, with the background full of meadows teeming with wildlife - appropriate for an album that’s a sort of musical discussio around the romanticisation of our pastoral past.

What did you listen to growing up?

Music was important in our house, and 90s classics like REM, Massive Attack, The Prodigy were definitely played a lot. To this day, I’m a lover of dad music: the 60s/70s bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and The Who all featured big while I was growing up. Neil Young’s “Old Man” is a big comfort track that immediately brings me back to my childhood home in 2005.
Albums that were instrumental for me were Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, Pearl Jam’s Ten, and Pink Floyd’s Delicate Sound of Thunder. Increasingly I’m finding I love whatever my mum used to stick on.&nbsp;
And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

I’m currently in a (very long) goth rock phase - I’ve been really into Fields of the Nephilim’s Elizium album, plus some classics from The Sisters of Mercy and The Mission. To completely clash with that, right now I’m listening to a lot of Northern Soul (thanks mum) which works as a pretty good antidote the former!

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?I’m currently trying to put my pitch together for my graphic novel, which I originally published as a webcomic called SARGENTUM. (https://tapas.io/series/SARGENTUM). It’s about a boy who makes an ill-fated deal with a witch, and draws heavily from British folklore. I’m currently working on a fresh way to tell the story for publication, because I started it a VERY long time ago and I’d love to do it justice now!

My freelance work includes LUNAR, written by Chris Bradford and illustrated by me, which came out this October, and I’m looking forward to working on the sequels. I also produced a short comic for the post apocalyptic anthology ON SHOT: After the End, which should be in print soon - exciting!

🎵 IT216: Desert Dust
✏️ Holly Farndell🗓 22.03.24

Holly is a Brighton based illustrator.

Howdy, Holly. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
Desert Dust is a compilation of songs to transport you into a daydream road tripping through the desert - a bumpy camper van ride kicking up the desert dust, with sun-kissed skin and a warm breeze through the window. The playlist flows from euphoric movie-scene belters imagining you’re in Thelma &amp; Louise, winding down to a desert sunset drive with a country twang weaving its way through.

I think everyone can relate to being that kid sitting in the back of the car, listening to music and having big main character energy as you’re gazing out of the window. This is kind of like that but for actual cool adults who can drive (unfortunately, still not me). One of my bucket list dreams is to take a road trip in a van through the American desert, so I guess I’m manifesting it with a lil drawing.
What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

My illustration is a little window into my daydream! My drawing process always starts by getting my ideas out in writing, whether that's research or words I want to inspire the artwork. Then I’ll create some really rough sketches on Procreate - I used to draw a lot more in my sketchbook but with commercial work needing to be quite quick, I find doing the whole process digitally has really helped. I’ll clean up the sketch and scribble a really rough idea of the colour palette I want to use, then I’ll start filling in block shapes and finish it off with all the details and textures (my favourite bit!).

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

I’ve always felt really inspired by Leif Podhajsky’s artwork, particularly for Tame Impala’s Innerspeaker album. Just fascinated by how his psychedelic artwork matches the music so perfectly. <img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/aa562fcba1bad1b5d02e2320b881a7b537f32ff14297897318df6350348206ee/image1.jpg" data-mid="207364391" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/aa562fcba1bad1b5d02e2320b881a7b537f32ff14297897318df6350348206ee/image1.jpg" />Revolver – The Beatles1966, ParlophoneDesign: Klaus Voormann
All of The Beatles album covers are great, but particularly Revolver, designed by Klaus Voormann. I just love the total un-seriousness of it, it feels like he really captured the weird and wonderful-ness of The Beatles.<img width="600" height="400" width_o="600" height_o="400" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6e01a13e68eb3fe47472451663dd8f061e3d780e3f1a173e7472ca627314fd30/image3.jpg" data-mid="207364400" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/6e01a13e68eb3fe47472451663dd8f061e3d780e3f1a173e7472ca627314fd30/image3.jpg" />Neon signs for I Like It When You Sleep for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It. – The 19752016, Dirty Hit / PolydorCreative: David Drake &amp; Samuel Burgess Johnson

I loved the artwork surrounding the release of The 1975’s album, I Like It When You Sleep for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, shot and directed by David Drake &amp; Samuel Burgess Johnson. I often like to use words in my work, something about the combination of mediums really emphasises the sentiment. Also, neon pink!?!

What did you listen to growing up?

I went through a lot of music phases, core memories include:
Dancing around the living room with my mum, cranking up I’m ‘Every Woman’ by Chaka Khan on our old stereo. My dad driving me to school in his bumpy green Land Rover with gardening tools and soil scattered all over the place, listening to The Beatles. Seeing Lily Allen on the TV dancing down the street singing to ‘LDN’, and begging my parents to buy me her album for Christmas. Briefly went through a bit of a JLS phase (we don’t need to talk about that).
When I turned 13 I discovered My Chemical Romance and suddenly everything in the world sucked, so I had The Black Parade on repeat and black eyeliner stained eyelids for the next couple of years. Being a true Tumblr girly, I slowly emerged from my emo phase into indie music, from the likes of Alt-J, Foals and Swim Deep. At uni I discovered Mac DeMarco and watched Pitchfork’s documentary Pepperoni Playboy weekly (perfect medicine for all the indie-boy heartbreaks).
I would now class myself as ‘grown up’, so I’d say that discovering Tame Impala whilst at university was my last pivotal moment musically. Currents really influenced my work at the time and still transports me to another dreamy place every time I listen to it.
And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

I moved in with my partner two years ago and he’s really hogged the aux cable ever since, so most of what I listen to now is music he’s discovered and I’ve been forced to listen to. But the man has great taste! Whenever we have long roadtrips, like our trip from Brighton to Glasgow earlier this year, we listen to Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon &amp; Garfunkel, and that’s become the soundtrack to adventures with him - the album is&nbsp; a real rollercoaster through all the emotions.

My summer was filled with the delight that is Jungle’s new album, Volcano. And when I need to be in deep work concentration mode, I’ve loved ‘jazz is for ordinary people’ by berlioz.

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?I’m currently in the midst of working on my first publishing project, which is a dream!! It’s been a lot of hard work over the last couple of months but it's been exciting to get my teeth into a big project, 2023 was a hell of a quiet year!!

Back in November, my studio (full of lovely fellow illustrator pals, also known as Lucky Frog Studio) put on our first art show at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton, which was SO fun. We’re currently making plans for more exciting things to come in 2024, with the aim of bringing the illustration community in Brighton to life!

🎵 IT215: thrash!
✏️ Alex Ling🗓 27.02.24

Alex is an illustrator, designer, and comics maker based in New York.

Hey Alex. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
The tape originally came from a playlist I made in late 2021 that was more of a chill house vibe, but soon after making it I found myself adding kind of aggressive tracks. I graduated school a couple of years before then, so with my awkward early 20s coinciding with the isolation of 2020 and 2021, I think I was subconsciously looking for a cathartic release from feeling so stagnant. For this mix, I looked for music that felt like it could reverberate through your entire body, where you start the evening with a lil’ dancing, then end it thrashing. I wanted to organize the songs in an order that emulates a night out that progressively gets more chaotic and feverish.
What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

Kind of like when you’re pausing a show and unintentionally stop on a moment that looks strange because it’s between frames, for the cover art I wanted to illustrate something that felt like a glitchy freeze frame. Since the tape is about a journey towards going feral, the cover art “pauses” as the figure is metamorphosing and losing themselves in the music.

My initial sketches were surprisingly kind of painterly, but considering the theme of the tape, I ultimately wanted the cover to look more deranged and messy. I eventually realized photo and video were probably going to be the most relevant references for the “freeze frame” feeling I was looking for. Then, since I’m a sucker for a moodboard, I cobbled together references that I really resonated with.

I think the longest part of the process was just landing on a composition for the cover. Because my main references were photo and video, it was an interesting challenge trying to replicate that look in illustration. I went through a lot of different versions to land on the final cover, but I felt like I was able to turn my brain off and just let myself experiment with whatever felt “right” as I drew. Since I wanted something that could be blurry, rough, and disorienting, there was a lot of freedom to play around with shadow, texture, and funky layer styles, which I really enjoyed. It was also funny taking the world’s least flattering reference photos of myself so the expression and angle looked somewhat natural.
<img width="600" height="643" width_o="600" height_o="643" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a31b5fa67aafdd3632884cd5a70cde4a2b2ef485e6e16e8b8449afe277d919fd/image2.jpg" data-mid="205513836" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/a31b5fa67aafdd3632884cd5a70cde4a2b2ef485e6e16e8b8449afe277d919fd/image2.jpg" />Moodboard from left to right, top to bottom:
Outer Space (1999)
@wrapped.nil
Fear and Hunger 2: Termina&nbsp;

A few notes: Outer Space and @wrapped.nil’s photography were huge inspirations for the cover. Both pushed me to think about depicting movement and sequence in a single frame, which was a really fun experiment.I’ve been following Fear and Hunger since the first game and it blows my mind how much detail is packed into the series. There’s a scene in the second game where the player can watch the process of a townsperson turning into one of the enemies they can encounter. The entire sequence is so unsettling and I wanted to emulate that transformation for the cover. What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

Photography: Huck KwongAlthough the KRZ album isn’t a standalone music project, its soundtrack has stuck with me just as much as the game itself. Most of the audio in KRZ is diegetic, but throughout the game there are moments where a song becomes the focal point of the scene. Music in KRZ unfolds and guides the story, with many of the tracks foreshadowing different themes and even directly connecting to the characters’ backstories.

What did you listen to growing up?

I was tragically a cross between a weeb and a wannabe emo kid. I listened to a lot of Paramore, My Chemical Romance, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vocaloid (those Nico Nico Douga PVs are permanently ingrained in my brain, iykyk), and anime and video game soundtracks. In high school, I started listening to K-pop, mainly keeping up with Block B, HYUKOH, BAP, 2NE1, SHINee, and f(x). I also somehow began my Sufjan Stevens fixation around the same time and would listen to his entire discography religiously (and still do).
And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

Lately I’ve been listening to Vagabon’s Sorry I Haven’t Called, Carly Rae Jepsen’s The Loveliest Time, and a Cantopop playlist made by my best friend’s mom. I also have a playlist with songs I’ve found myself listening to a lot this year, so I usually rotate through that if I’m not listening to anything specific.

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?Last month I contributed an illustration for the Asian American Arts Alliance for its first print release of their magazine, The AMP, which was a really cool project to be a part of. I’ve also been on a risograph kick for a while now, and I’m working on printing a small postcard book with nature photos I’ve taken on different trips with friends. I’ve tabled a couple of times this year, but in the coming year I’m hoping to dedicate more time to comic-making and participating in more events. Since I work full-time, I’m trying to find a nice balance between my job, making art, seeing friends, and staying healthy. In general though, I’m just trying to have fun!

🎵 IT214: Too Much To Ask (A 2000s Memoir)
✏️ Lily Taylor🗓 20.01.24

Lily is an illustrator and 3D artist based in Toronto, Canada.

Hey Lily. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
This tape was inspired by that feeling of loneliness, your first crush, and the dramatics that can only come from being in high school. I remember listening to these songs on repeat anytime I felt moody (which was often), and I know most millennials will relate to this playlist in the same way.
What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

I was inspired by my childhood bedroom which had purple walls, and sheer blinds over the windows. I had posters of music I definitely did not listen to, to feel edgy and cool. I referenced a photo I took of my current bedroom when I woke up early and the sun was just starting to rise, I thought the colours were a great representation of that muted emo feeling.

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

🎵 IT213: Edgelands
✏️ Tim Bird🗓 14.10.23

Tim is a comic book artist and illustrator, based in Winchester, UK.

Hi Tim. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
I wanted to create a soundtrack for overlooked spaces. Michael Symmons Roberts and Paul Farley wrote a great book called Edgelands – it's all about the places in between. Places you might pass through on your way to somewhere else but not notice. Bits of land on the edge of town – not part of the city or the countryside. The big post-industrial landscapes of decaying factories are often glamorised in music, but not so much the patch of nettles between Tesco and the motorway.

I tried to pick a mix of songs that picked up on the atmosphere of these edgeland places. There are references to out-of-town retail parks, suburbs, and railway embankments. I included instrumental songs that I felt had a similar vibe, looking to bands on the Ghostbox and Clay Pipe Music labels who take inspiration from the urban landscape and filter it through hauntological reverberations.
What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

I wanted to try and show a familiar place from the wrong angle. You can see the glow of city lights in the background, but we’re looking out from under a bridge at the back of a building which is hidden by a wall and barbed wire. We’re with the ghosts – the forgotten elements of the city, forever pushing abandoned shopping trolleys through disused canals.

I make comics and zines, and my work is often about place. I like to explore places by walking – the work of psychogeographers such as Iain Sinclair and Nick Papadimitriou have had a big influence on me. I take lots of photographs of the places I visit which inspire my work.

Artwork: Maxim Peter GriffinI thought Spiritualized’s Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space was an interesting approach to designing an album cover – the case was designed to look like a box of tablets and the CD was sealed in a foil packet and had to be popped out like a pill. The liner notes looked like a doctor’s prescription. It played on their reputation as being quite a druggy band.

What did you listen to growing up?

Remembering the music I listened to as a teenager makes me cringe. Very earnest indie rock by bands like the Manic Street Preachers and Smashing Pumpkins. I read Melody Maker every week and my tastes didn’t go beyond guitar bands. When I left home, I became friends with a music student called Patrick who made me some mix-tapes and my taste became much more eclectic. We still make playlists for each other occasionally and he still introduces me to music I wouldn’t otherwise have found. I’m going to see the Penguin Café Orchestra soon on his recommendation.
And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

I try to vary it as much as possible. The internet’s great for having access to an almost infinite supply of music, but sometimes the choice can be overwhelming. I always end up going back to indie pop – it's my musical comfort blanket.
I listen to the NME’s C86 compilation whenever I need a pick me up. Bands like The Pastels, The Popguns, The Darling Buds can always get me out of a slump – all badly recorded jangly guitars and out of tune vocals. Perfect!

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?I’m currently studying an MA in Illustration at Falmouth University, so I'm trying to be open to new creative opportunities. I’ve been making zines for years but am now trying to find ways of making a living from drawing. It's proving hard though. I’m working on a graphic novel, so when that’s finished maybe it’ll make me millions.

✏️ Mad Love Creative Co.🗓 08.10.23

Mad Love Creative Co. aka Carmen Jabier is a graphic illustrator based in Otario, Canada.

Hi Carmen. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
This is a fun playlist full of 80s rock songs that just make you feel good! The structure of the songs themselves, the borderline cheesiness, as well as the over the top instrumentals and vocals always make me want to play air drums and air guitar, AND sing both main and background vocals all at the same time. These songs are full of excitement and emotion, and they make you want to go somewhere, do something, or be someone (maybe all three!).

What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

I wanted to showcase how this playlist makes me feel. My cover art features my take on a classic 80s car and stereo/cassette player, because this playlist is the kind that you put on when you go for a drive through the city with the windows down, wind blowing through your hair, belting the lyrics as loud as you can! Like the text I included, it really makes you want to enjoy the ride, metaphorically and physically!

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?
The first song + artwork combo that comes to mind is “In Your Arms” by Kina Grannis and I’m still in awe of the stop motion in the music video to this day.

“In Your Arms” [video] – Kina Grannis
2011

Another, albeit cheesy, song + artwork combo that comes to mind is “It’s Gonna Be Me” by *NSYNC. Something about the toys coming to life blew my little kid mind when I first saw it, haha!

“It’s Gonna Be Me” [video] – *NSYNC2000, JiveDir: Wayne Isham

Lastly, “Take On Me” by a-ha is another one that I think about often.

“Take On Me” [video] – a-ha

When it comes to albums, I really love the cover art for “Plantasia”!

What did you listen to growing up?

I was a very much late 90s-early 2000s music kid, and I listened to everything and anything from pop to punk to R&amp;B! Much of my music influence also came from listening to my uncle’s playlists which consisted of a lot of 70s-80s rock!
And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

I would be totally lying if I didn’t credit TikTok for many of the songs that I’ve had on repeat lately. It’s also a great starting off point to discover new artists, songs, and even genres of music!

I’ve had songs from this playlist on constant rotation, but on a different vibe, I’ve been very into afrobeats this summer (and yes, it’s kept me dancing throughout the heat!), but now that the weather is winding down, I’m feeling more in the mood for The Lumineers and The Paper Kites!
Also, if I really want to focus I’ll put on the Fallout 4 soundtrack!

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?Tons of fun things! I’m always posting new work (personal and client projects) on my Instagram, and am always open to commissions and all kinds of projects. I’ve also been participating in a bunch of local markets this year and have been loving meeting people in person (and would love to meet any of you who are in the Greater Toronto Area!)

✏️ Annabel Hewitson🗓 19.09.23

Annabel is an illustrator and comic artist based in London, UK.

Howdy Annabel. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
This is a playlist about a spy called ‘Tinto’, a character who crashes through life leaving behind broken hearts and conflicting stories. The playlist is built around the song “Summer Wine” by Nancy Sinatra &amp; Lee Hazlewood and includes riffs on classic spy instrumentals and 60s/70s music with themes of love without commitment and fleeting encounters with a mysterious stranger.

What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

I knew from the start that I wanted my cover art to focus on the character of Tinto, and that they should be holding a glass of wine in some way. The name ‘Tinto’ has a long story behind it for me but the music selection was largely inspired by its meaning of ‘red wine’ in Spanish and my favourite drink to order in Spain - Tinto de Verano (summer wine).

Aside from the wine it took me a long time to decide on what Tinto should be doing here, I played with a few variations on having them jumping/climbing out of a window after being caught spying but I ended up settling on this image of them turning round in the act of being spotted listening in on radio transmissions (or some other similar spy shenanigan). I loved that it echoed the act of listening to music and I also really liked the subtle callback to the album cover of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlemere’s Summer Wine with the similarity in pose.<img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0bce3a8b9a82ddd4e2acdccd70def649ed60089a753cbab6a08325294bd83928/image2.jpg" data-mid="191167597" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/0bce3a8b9a82ddd4e2acdccd70def649ed60089a753cbab6a08325294bd83928/image2.jpg" />

I created this drawing in Procreate on my iPad (the time-lapse is almost 10 hours long! With more than half of that being redrawing compositions…) and I used mostly a mixture of the selection tool with auto fill and some pen and pencil-like brushes that I bought a while ago and use on everything. For a similar default brush, the Shale brush is pretty similar to the pencil one I use!<img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8bab2b0b1c0429531b7ef1b890d322858c283747150983b8dbb49c7306d1dfc4/image6.jpg" data-mid="191167655" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/8bab2b0b1c0429531b7ef1b890d322858c283747150983b8dbb49c7306d1dfc4/image6.jpg" />
I also have a collection of textures that I use in my drawings from old projects and interesting printing mistakes etc so I used one of those here in the background. I really enjoyed playing with the text on this too, I’ve been putting more thought into fonts and text in my art lately and I was super happy with how the hand-lettering came out here!

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?<img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/261cd0ce06edf73cf136765c09183dd62d3819c5166693fff50882988de040ec/ML_TheOlympians.jpg" data-mid="191168571" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/261cd0ce06edf73cf136765c09183dd62d3819c5166693fff50882988de040ec/ML_TheOlympians.jpg" />The Olympians - The Olympians2016, Daptone RecordsArtwork: Max Löffler

I am 100% biased towards anything with an illustrated cover – I often find new music just from clicking on exciting looking covers like with this album by The Olympians. The colours and the use of texture just really called out to me! I’ll be honest, most of the time the album covers I like don’t match up with the music I most like to listen to so I was glad when I turned out to enjoy this album for the music too.

I also love Saint Motel and tend to like all their covers, but I wanted to give special mention to The Original Motion Picture Soundtack Pt. 2 – the songs on this album were originally released as 3 smaller albums and the design of these really intrigued me with the hints to upcoming songs. I remember being so excited about these at the time. It’s not the illustrated/textural kind of imagery I was talking about with The Olympians but I think it just works really well. Their music video for Move was also the first thing I saw in VR and that totally blew me away.

I should also mention ELO’s Time and Public Service Broadcasting’s The Race For Space - both of these are albums I really love, and I’m pretty sure print-outs of them lived on my wall at uni for a good while!

What did you listen to growing up?

I listened to a lot of ELO, at first because my parents played it and later as a teenager I made it my mission to listen to every song they’d ever brought out (which turned out to be 12+ hours of music…).
My teenage years were soundtracked by a lot of My Chemical Romance and Greenday too, and I Monster’s “Daydream in Blue” always makes me think of sitting in my old kitchen as an 8 year-old.
And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

I’m having a serious funk phase at the moment! L’Imperatrice, Jungle, and Alfie Templeman appear on a lot of my recent playlists and as for other genres I think the previously-mentioned “Daydream in Blue” has managed to beat almost all the songs from my Tinto playlist to be my 2nd-most listened to song this month behind Summer Wine. I think I’ll always be listening to anything and everything jazz as well, Billie Holiday especially gets a lot of plays from me.

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?I’m currently working on a comic for One Shot books’ second anthology! It’s a short sci-fi story about AI and creativity and centres on a woman slowly going mad after seeing an exhibition on AI art.
I also have a lot of smaller projects in the works - I’ve got a whole list of new things I want to make for some conventions coming up so there’s plenty to keep me busy! If you’re based in the UK I’m at MCM London in October and Thoughtbubble in November so come and say hello in person! :-)
