Katy is an illustrator and TV art dept creative based in Southeast England.
Hi Katy. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
I’ve brought together an eclectic, yet chill, mix of songs with double-entendre titles, to help audibly disguise the dreaded plop and splash in the toilet bowl. The song titles alone will take you on an emotional journey of defecation. I’ve been mostly inspired by my IBS ridden partner (love you Callum) and a story I once heard of a girl who met a guy on Tinder, went back to his place and threw her poop out of his bathroom window because it wouldn’t flush. I think about that more often than I’d like to admit.
What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?
I basically gave myself the brief of: ‘illustrate poop but make it classy’. I love working with my hands (wiping included), so always enjoy starting with a drawing-with-scissors approach.
I went through puberty with Lungs by Florence +Tthe Machine on repeat, and always found the image of the lung necklace as raw and spooky as the puberty I was experiencing.

What did you listen to growing up?
My dad always had on Pink Floyd or Queen and Mum was into cheesy 00s pop and Robbie Williams. No toilet-related songs, unfortunately.
And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?
I’m the type of person to play one song that I love on repeat until I can’t stand it anymore, and I think I’m about 17 plays away from hating Make Me Feel by Janelle Monáe.
What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?
I’m doing a lot of tv art department work and easing myself back into illustration when I have the time - so this lil project was really releasing for me (last toilet pun, I promise!).
