🎵 IT194: Cheery Choons
✏️ Gus Scott
🗓 05.01.23

Gus is an illustrator based in Frome, Somerset, UK.

Heya Gus. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?

I wanted all the music to be light and cheery, something you could chuck on for an hour and a half at work and gradually raise the tempo as you went through. It gets a bit more squelchy at the end which is always fun. I wanted it to be something you could work too, but at the same time have a lil boogie. Always time for a boogie

What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

I wanted the image to be colourful and full of life and movement. That fitted with the vibe of the tracks. I did it all on my iPad. I just wanted it to be good and cheery :)

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

I love the front covers for Todd Terje. The illustrations that Bendik Kaltenborn does for him are awesome, Spiral or Alfonso Muskedunder are really cool.

Multimedia section [screenshots] (inc. Gorillaz) – Gorillaz
2001, Parlophone
Artwork/design: Jamie Hewlett / Zombie

Gorillaz was the first album I ever bought. I remember having this mind blowing experience. I noticed that there was a Mac icon on the back of the cd so I put it in my parents apple mac and it loaded up this interactive flash style website/game in Kong Studios. I remember as a kid thinking it was the coolest thing ever with all the hidden details and weird little characters and animations everywhere.

What did you listen to growing up?

When I was young my parents had a big towering stack of CDs and CD player in our Kitchen and there was always something playing from there, my pa used to be into punk but he didn’t used to put much of that on, I think my ma used to have more of an influence on what was playing. I used to love digging around and trying them out at random. Things like Shuggie Otis, Thievery Corporation, Jackie Mittoo, Lauren Hill and the Dandy Warhols were on a lot. My ma used to play a lot of jazz as well. When I went to college me and my friends got into producers and enjoyed things like appleblim, ramadanman and joy Orbison. It must have a bit tragic trying to play that stuff in a Nissan Micra on the way to college, but we had a laugh! :D

And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

I came across an album this year that I really enjoyed by Tabu Ley Rochereau called Laiss Toi Aime. I had that on in the studio a lot as it was really chilled to get your head down and work to. I find I often work better to music that doesn’t have many vocals. There were two EPs I rinsed this year as well, Echoes From Mamori by Olof Dreijer which is like some mad 13 minute long rainforest track, and I Was In New York by Payfone which has this rolling baseline in it. They were both on repeat!

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?

I’ve just started illustrating a book for children about philosophy which is really cool. It’s the second book in a series and the first one was really fun so I’m looking forward to this one too. I’m also hoping to get back into doing some printmaking if I can next year, I used to do a lot of screen printing and lino and I’d love to get back into it. Other than that, hunting down some editorial pieces and writing a couple of kid’s books!

Where can we find you?
