🎵 IT180: There’s a Party in the Studio
✏️ YUK FUN
🗓 28.09.22

Lucy and Patrick are YUK FUN – a duo of illustrators / makers of illustrated goods based in Portslade, UK.

Hi Lucy and Patrick, Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?

Our tape is titled “There’s a Party in the Studio” and it is made up of the kind of music we’d play at a... er... party in our studio. We have a dream that one day we’ll open up a really cool art space where we could put on exhibitions of our favourite illustrators and artists and have a little shop, maybe a recording studio... anyway this playlist is all the stuff that would get played at the opening parties. Ideally you should be able to dance to every song on the tape from start to finish.

What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

[Patrick] We went for a picture of an animal person digging deep for gold in a record shop. When we’re looking for inspiration for an illustration we often look through sketchbooks and come across drawings that fit a brief. In this case I had done this drawing in one of my sketchbooks with Posca pens.

I took a picture with my iPad, put it in Procreate and then traced it, making a few alterations. I like the Dry ink brush and using a limited palette of maybe four or five colours.

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

We’ve made a whole Pinterest board of our favourite album covers: pinterest.co.uk/yukfun/record-covers-and-more

Here are a few examples:

Delta Blues Band – Delta Blues Band
1969, Parlophone
Artwork: Rina Dahlerup

The outfit and the colours are 10/10.

Get Ready Rock Steady – Various
1967, Coxsone Records

We’re suckers for cool cut-out photos and hand drawn typography!

“Sonne Und Schnee” / “Ja, Der Skilehrer“ – Waltraut Schulz & Herbert Roth w/ Instrumentalgruppe
Unknown year (German Democratic Republic [GDR]), AMIGA

Classy bit of vintage illustration. Love the use of the hole in the sleeve on this.

はやく人間になりたいッ! – 笑福亭鶴瓶
1976, Roon Record
Illustration: 園山俊二

We love the combination of illustration and photography on this one plus the little guy in dungarees in the top corner!

What did you listen to growing up?

[Lucy] When I was little my dad used to play cassette tapes in the car of Chinese opera music until the tapes melted… My older sister was into New Kids On The Block and sometimes she’d let me listen to her tapes (or I’d wait until she was out haha). As a teen I had a major boyband phase, then a little R’n’B phase until I discovered bands and live music.

[Patrick] My parents weren’t that into music but there were plenty of tape cassettes that we’d listen to, especially in the car. These included The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Abba, Tina Turner, Phil Collins and Kate Bush. When we were little kids (in the 90s) me and my older brother loved pretty much anything that was in the charts at the time, especially all the britpop as well as reggae and dance music.

And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

We’re both into Chai, Japanese Breakfast, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Little Simz, so they get played a lot in the studio. We also listen to radio shows on NTS which play a huge variety of stuff.

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?

We’re currently prepping for the Christmas selling season with a load of art markets coming up and working on a few commissions which are hush-hush for now. Also looking forward to seeing everyone’s work in the Seed Magazeen exhibition soon (30th Sep - 2nd Oct) which we have a piece in.
