Connie is an illustrator and animator based in Brighton, UK.

Hiya Connie. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?

Hello! My tape is titled ‘Driving Home’ and is a curated selection of euro(ish)-jazz that reminds me of the short drive home from a day at the beach on a hot summer's eve. I’ve always loved french/Italian film soundtracks since I was a teen and hope they inspire some nostalgic feelings for other listeners too. The order of the tunes should get sleepier as they go, drifting off with some Joao Gilberto.

What direction did you take with your cover art, and what was your process?

As soon as I made the playlist I knew instantly which drive home I was thinking of and just drew it. I grew up in Brighton and we often headed over to Ovingdean beach (about 20 mins away) to swim in the summer. It has clear seas in the heat and sits on a rocky cliff edge so the drive home sits all along the beautiful south coast. I drew from memory for this, which felt quite freeing, and just sat with my iPad for a day looking out the window trying to remember the textures of the grass and old wooden fence.

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

I absolutely love Toro Y Moi’s (Chazwick Bundick) art direction towards his music and album art! It’s always heavily influenced by graphic design trends of the moment which makes each album totally different from the last. This isn’t just with design but with sound too. Chaz has lots of musical projects/collabs (bands, dj groups etc) under lots of different names… but I love Les Sins (synthy pop to vibe to) and The Mattson 2 (indie pop for the bedroom) the most. He also works with the Portland-based design studio FISK a whole bunch and the work they create together is AMAZING! They actually filmed the music video for ‘Ordinary Pleasure’ inside the studio - complete with an RP riso machine in the back.

What did you listen to growing up?

Growing up I listened to whatever my parents played in the car which was usually (and often exclusively) David Bowie, Ibiza Chill Classix and the Scissor Sisters. When I was able to buy my own music I loved (and still do love) Basement Jaxx, FOALS, The Cribs, Tokyo Police Club and Bibio.

And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

I’ve been listening to “Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy on repeat at the moment. I’m a bit of a sucker for finding one song I love and listening to it until I hate it - but so far so good with this one. When I’m not listening to just one song, I often find myself playing the album Summer’s Over by Jordana and TV Girl.

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?

I was lucky enough to be awarded Arts Council Funding recently so I’m working on developing a children’s book about community and food! Apart from that I’m just enjoying working on client work and chatting to my studio buds! We recently set up an instagram to share what we all do (we’re a group of 8 illustrators all based in Brighton) – @luckyfrogstudio
