Hi Lucas. Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?

For my tape, I have been thinking for a little bit that I wanted to do something thematic, expressing my love the world of film, science fiction and the motion picture The Fifth Element, focusing on the character Leeloo. So it’s kinda a Luc Besson tribute/trip hop/sci-fi mashup tape). It features artists like Lorn, Massive Attack, Burial, Bjork, Flying Lotus and a bunch of samples from Éric Serra's work on The Fifth Element soundtrack itself.

How did you go about the artwork?

For starters just to get some really rough ideas I watched The Fifth Element a couple of times, I tried to ingest as much as I could Then I drew a lot of rough ideas on sheets of paper and random sketchbooks (I tend lose track of ideas and end up drawing up something else, it’s a little bit chaotic to be honest, but it works for me, in a way).

Almost all of my work lately is scanned and then finished of on my Wacom Cintiq, in Adobe Photoshop (where I tend to change every single thing to the initial design, and then start again, haha!)

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

As a big appreciator of movies and their soundtracks, I have become a huge fan of one of the coolest movie merchandise sites around: Mondo.

Mondo have been re-issuing some of the best soundtracks around, and in doing so create a wonderful relationship between music and art with sleeves designed by some of the best artists around. I’ve been a huge fan of the partnership between Mondo and the artist Kilian Eng.

I’ve been in awe of Eng's original illustrations for record sleeves for a long time, especially his work on the re-issue of Ridley Scott's Alien and Tim Burtons' Batman Returns to name a few (I love them all).

What did you listen to growing up?

The world of cinema was one of my my gateways into music, growing up I loved listening to the soundtracks to the films I watched. As a kid I loved The Batman (Danny Elfman and Prince), Batman Returns (Danny Elfman) etc soundtracks and  Elfman's subsequent discography and collaborations with Tim Burton.

As I got older, my taste in music evolved from trip-hop and hip-hop in all of its variations, to the moody sounds of Burial and Lorn, as featured in this playlist.

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?

Other than hunting for new projects to work on, I’ve got a few comic and editorial illustration projects that are all in different stages of development. As of lately, as a side project in between projects, I’ve been enjoying making alternative poster designs of some of my favourite films, currently I’m planning a series of posters based on The Planet of The Apes franchise and other various films.

So yeah, I am just enjoying making things for my portfolio and living in the moment!

Where can we find you?
