Jennifer is a designer and art director based in London.

Hi Jen, can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?

I recently travelled to Japan - the first time I travelled alone. I wanted to take myself out of my comfort zone and experience something new and uncertain. I realised that being your most creative isn’t possible if you’re comfortable. A lot of the songs here scored my experience, helping to inspire me alongside the culture, scenery and art of Japan.

How did you go about the artwork?

Japan was hot. Really hot. I got obsessed with this drink, the name of which I couldn't read. It was peachy and slightly alcoholic and super refreshing. I just called it the “Peach Butt Drink”, and I’d drink sat in the parks, often listening to these tunes, people watching and taking in the space. So the visual idea of the vending machines, which were fascinating and often my peachy salvation, became a motif throughout and I felt a strange connection to these increasingly crazily-designed vending machines.

What are your fave album covers, records with a great music and artwork combo, or musical projects with a visual component?

cLOUDDEAD’s self-titled LP is probably my favourite ever record. The simple dreaminess of the sky on the cover, mottled with pinky-blue cloud, is a perfect contrast to the slightly warped hip-hop vibe of the music. It’s a piece of design that almost feels like it wasn’t designed, like it’s just there, the most natural thing in the world. And that daydreamy feeling has never left me because you can be happy or sad in a daydream - whatever you need to be, because it’s just for you. Listening to that album feels like it’s just for me, like it’s a special place that nobody else can hear in the same way. And the cover just feels like that daydream.

What did you listen to growing up?

Aside from cLOUDDEAD I was obsessed with Alanis Morisette, The Beatles, Bowie, trashy 90s hip-hop and, of course, the Smashing Pumpkins. I always felt like I was tapped into the same creative energy and expression they were.

And what’s on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

It’s basically just Lizzo’s entire discography on repeat at the moment. And a lot of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

What’s happening in your creative world at the moment?

I’ve just branded Lovebox 2019. I’ve been painting more, tapping into the same creative energy I felt in Japan, and I’m focusing a lot more on my own work as an artist outside of commercial work.

Where can we find you?
