🎵 IT008: word - play - list
✏️ A Year on Earth
🗓 04.06.18
A Year On Earth is a bi-weekly show on 8-Ball Radio produced by Del Hardin Hoyle and Sam Bellingham. Del is an artist, designer and musician. Sam is a musician and producer. Both are based in New York.
Hi guys! Can you tell us a little bit about your tape and your song selections?
The playlist was built from the concept that each track would contain a word from the previous track. The word could be from the song title or the artists name. We had no idea what the playlist would be before we started.

‘Unknowingly’ by Kim Jung Mi became the first track because we needed to start somewhere and this song was a firm favourite from our last radio show mix ‘a year on earth 1973’
From there the two of us spent the night trawling through Spotify, playing songs and building the playlist. There are tracks in there that we have played on our shows and others that we love anyway and a few we had never heard of like Timeh Yol’s ‘Son of God’; we heard that intro with the mental drum machine fills and started laughing and we know when a song does that to us, we have to use it. Wildcookie is someone else we hadn’t heard before. After finding that track we went through their discography and there’s some good stuff to go listen to.
The best bit of the A Year On Earth project is the opportunity it gives both of us to find new music and revisit old favourites.
How did you go about the artwork for the tape?
Del makes all the visual work for A Year on Earth. All the imagery for the shows so far has been based on globe projections and solar eclipse diagrams. We both have a fetish for information graphics. We happened upon the Futures Cone a while ago and wanted to do something with that. Also known as the ‘cone of plausibility’ it is a device to define the possible outcomes and potential of a given thing over time. It fit the concept of how we picked the playlist and it almost very nearly was gonna be this…
